On a regular basis, fiction authors use certain vocabularies when writing. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. To make the writing more appealing, a fiction writer should use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives when writing. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. When a novel you are reading is engaging, you will easily get into it. After reading and enjoying the novel, reread it again. The goal is to examine how the work was written. The aspect of writing is where you should focus on, they include how the plot and characters were developed and the technical aspects like grammar. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
The authors differ in the use of words, spelling and punctuation. For example, among is used by the Americans and amongst by the British. Writing for either the American readers or British readers each have their standard of rules that you should stick to.
Expanding the base of the vocabulary fiction authors know is important and it is possible to do. This can be done anytime when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. This seems to be general knowledge, but most authors do not usually do this. Besides it being a logical thing to do, it is one way of building your vocabulary. To make categories that suits your needs, get a notebook or any other means you desire. Be keen when listening to people talk, or when reading and even conversations on the TV. Take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns that are being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. Keeping a list of the words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use is important. For example for the eyes, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room’.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. The first draft you make should use this list.
